This doesn't really have anything to do with the hose clamp itself, but it's still good to know before you get upset. I drilled new holes for the cotter pin in the lamp tap, offset 90 degrees. Now it fits perfectly! In other lamps, the cones are screwed on, so it is significantly easier to loosen them.
